4 Knitting Formulas That Make Customizing Patterns Easy
If the word “math” makes you want to hide behind your yarn stash — don’t worry. These 4 simple knitting formulas are more like creative tools than schoolwork. They help you customize patterns, make your knits fit better, and boost your confidence — even if you're not a "math person." This post is all about using knitting formulas to free your creativity.
1. How to Convert cm to Stitches
Formula: cm × gauge ÷ 10 = number of stitches Want your sweater to be 50 cm wide and your gauge is 18 sts per 10 cm? 50 × 18 ÷ 10 = 90 stitches to cast on.
Use it when: Casting on, modifying widths, or designing from scratch.

2. How to Convert Stitches to cm
Formula: stitches × gauge ÷ 10 = cm Picked up 112 stitches and wondering how wide that really is? 112 × 18 ÷ 10 = about 201.6 cm.
Use it when: Checking fit or verifying stitch counts in custom knits.

3. How to Adjust Gauge by Knitting a Different Size
Formula: desired size ÷ your gauge × pattern gauge = pattern size Want 120 cm bust, pattern gauge is 20 sts, your gauge is 14 sts? 120 ÷ 14 × 20 = knit the smallest pattern size.
Use it when: You like the pattern but want a looser or tighter fabric.

4. How to Adjust Length Based on Row Gauge
Formula: (cm to add/remove × row gauge) ÷ 10 = rows to add/remove Need to shorten by 6 cm, row gauge is 26? 6 × 26 ÷ 10 = remove 15-16 rows.
Use it when: Changing cardigan or sleeve lengths in textured knits.

Math as a Tool, Not a Rule
You don’t need to be a math wizard to make these formulas work. You just need to:
